1. Don’t forget to eat and drink beforehand
It may not seem like it, but trying on dresses can be surprisingly exhausting, especially if you plan to visit several salons in one day.
Have a proper meal and stay hydrated before your appointment. Most salons offer drinks but brides often don’t get to enjoy their coffee or prosecco in peace.
2. Choose your company wisely (or go alone!)
Bring people who will be supportive and kind. Ideally, no more than three. Too many opinions can be overwhelming.
My personal tip: go alone to your first fitting. Without outside influence, it’s easier to tune into your own feelings. You can always show photos of your favourite dresses to loved ones later or schedule a second visit with them for reassurance.
3. Wear nude underwear
Most gowns have built-in cups, so you usually don’t need a bra. A nude bottom piece works best as it won’t show through the fabric or distract from the dress.
4. Choose your dress based on the venue and season
The staff will likely ask where your wedding will take place, not just out of curiosity, but to help you find the right style.
Formal, elegant gowns shine in a chateau setting, while light, relaxed dresses fit perfectly with barn weddings.
Also, consider the season, but remember that even in July, it can be rainy or chilly.
5. Don’t judge a dress by how it looks on the hanger
You might be surprised how different a gown looks once you try it on. Stay open-minded and try styles you wouldn’t normally pick. You might fall in love with one unexpectedly.
6. Move around in the dress
You’ll wear it all day and you definitely won’t just be standing still. Walk, sit and move around to make sure you feel comfortable enough that you won’t want to take it off at the end of the night.
7. Have someone take photos and videos
Ask your companion or the salon staff to photograph you from different angles. A short video is even better as it shows how the dress moves and captures details mirrors can’t.
Once you’ve tried on all your selected dresses, take a short break and go through the photos and videos. This will help you pick the perfect dress, which you can then try on again.
8. Trust your instincts
Your wedding dress will shape how you feel throughout the day. Choose one that makes you glow and feel confident.
If you’re hesitating, don’t worry. The right one is still waiting for you. You’ll find it, just like you found the right person.
9. Enjoy the experience
Above all, have fun! Finding the dress is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Take your time, let yourself be pampered and enjoy every minute of it.
